MixLess

Hear what you're mixing.

Set your levels, control your dynamics and compare what each change does. Four free mixing tools, plus Less Tube, a saturation plugin with four characters, now in field testing.

AU and VST3 on macOS with Apple silicon. VST3 on Windows.

Less Tube

Four saturation characters

Triode leads with the second harmonic and thickens before it distorts. Pentode is symmetric, so the odd harmonics carry the edge. Vari-Mu gives way as the signal pushes. Iron is the output transformer on its own, weight in the lows.

On the deck

Explore the model's response

The transfer curve is the live input to output shape, and the bars measure harmonics 2 through 8 against the fundamental. Both screens on the model are live: they follow the drive you set.

EXPLORE THE BROWSER MODEL

Triode132 BPM loop, stopped

Turn Drive and watch the model respond. This is an interactive browser demonstration; the display illustrates the model, not a live analysis of the loop. Listen to the recordings below to hear Less Tube itself.

TRANSFER

Input on the horizontal, output on the vertical. The dotted diagonal is the untouched signal.

HARMONICS

EvenOdd

Read from the current curve with a 1 kHz sine at minus 6 dBFS.

RECORDED WITH LESS TUBE

TriodeEight bar loop at 125 BPM, stopped

WHAT YOU ARE HEARING

Listen to the same loop dry and through each of the four models. These recordings were made with Less Tube VST3, build 0.3.0.

Switching keeps the playhead, so you compare the character rather than the edit point.

SETTINGS AND FILES

Drive 9 dB, mix 100 percent, everything else at default.

The files are matched to minus 18 LUFS integrated for comparison.

Lossless WAV: Dry, Triode, Pentode, Vari-Mu, Iron.

Less Tube

Pick the character, turn the unit

Choose a model and the valve in the socket changes. Drag the unit to see it from any side; the bars show the harmonic fingerprint of the character you picked.

Download

Four free plugins, macOS and Windows

Four of the plugins are free and stay free; Less Tube is paid. Download counts are public. macOS installers are notarised packages, Windows installers are signed.

Downloads are not open yet. You can explore the plugins, read the manuals and listen to the examples.

Engineering

How these are built

We know what you're hearing, and how little of it you need.

Carefully engineered

We develop and validate our plugins with care to keep our quality standards high. That care is what gives us confidence in what we make, and it is the same work on the free tools as on the paid ones.

Measured, then documented

Latency figures are exact sample counts reported to the host. Alias suppression, filter flatness and ceiling behaviour are measured on the build we test, and the specifications on each product page quote those measurements.

Judged by your ears

Less Tube and Less Comp include Delta, so you can listen to the difference the processing makes on its own. Use it next to bypass, then decide in the context of your mix.

LESS TUBE, MEASURED ON THE BUILD WE TEST
